The Mystery of Faith
We shared communion together this Sunday. Our liturgy before the meal was short ,and it all surrounded around the great mystery of faith:
Christ has died
Christ is risen
Christ will come again
Using the song Mystery by Charlie Hall, we together proclaimed this mystery. As I was leading us through the liturgy I was struck by how this creedal statement must shape our lives. The way I see myself, the way I see the world, the way I see my place in the world has all been masterfully affected by the Presence of Christ.
Christians believe that we are not just living through a cyclical version of history that is doomed to eternal repetition. We will not forever live through periods of war and peace, of birth and death, of hope and despair. Our story is going somewhere. Our story has an End. Our end is also found connected to the beginning of our story: our God created the world in love; our God redeemed the world in love; our God will once again reclaim the world in love. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
With Christ continually converting my mind to his ways, I am finding that I am looking for my role in this story. How can I participate in redemption? How do I focus my eyes at the wonderful End while setting my hands to work in the present? The great mystery of faith!

Spencer,
Good post, and it’s great to see the incorporation of that song into a worship service, especially communion. It was probably Hall’s best song when he performed with Wickham, and it’s risen to the top of my playlist in the past few weeks. So I like the thoughts and also very much the musical selection.
