About

And Are We Yet Alive is a hymn written by Charles Wesley in 1749.

This blog features reflections on finding life in the United Methodist Church, the local church, and those pockets of church that sometimes just happen without organization. I most often find these glimpses of life in ministry with the local church. A significant number of my posts explore my experience in ministry with Young Adults.  Let me be clear, this is not youth ministry but some sort of age demographic that simply starts post-high school and ends sometime later.  In my context, ministry with Young Adults includes spending significant time in exploring modern worship, alternative forms of discipleship, and the constant need to find different ways of communicating the Good News to a new generation.

Yet another layer of blog posts are my reflections on working within the large organizations that are the mega-church and the United Methodist Church.  I serve as Pastor with Young Adults  at Asbury United Methodist Church in Tulsa, OK.  Asbury in a very large church, which provides all sorts of ministry opportunities and challenges. I am also discovering what it means to work within a large denomination, which continually brings me back to Charles Wesley’s hymn, are we yet alive?

My wife, Abby, and I moved to Tulsa from Dallas in 2007. Before coming to Asbury, I worked in youth ministry in two United Methodist Churches. I attended seminary at Perkins School of Theology at SMU. Abby is a graphic designer who is devoted to helping the church discover better ways of communication and design (you can see her work here). Abby and I both lived in Tulsa previous to this appointment as college students at Oral Roberts University.  For more personal information (like what movies I like to watch), you may reference my Facebook; if you are interested in how a Pastor with Young Adults spends his time, feel free to follow me on Twitter.

It should be said that my views here may not line up with that of Asbury Church or the United Methodist Church.
